Wanted: A Life

You know, I've been wondering why I don't update my blog with my daily activities - cats acting up or trips to coffee shops or well, anything that isn't artistic criticism or political activism. At first, I thought maybe it's just because I'm a pedantic bore.

But obviously, that's not the case.

The truth is that I don't appear to have a life at the moment. I used to have a life. Back in university, I definitely had one. Now I have a job - that hollow non-life of the 9 to 5 that most of us share. But I don't have that much of a life when I get home. As fun as the episodes on the used Star Trek: The Original Series (Season Two) DVD set are, or my Firefly and Doctor Who DVDs are, it's not really a life.

Now, I could buy some self-help books, go to clubs, join some groups, or get a lobotomy and join a mainstream religion. But really, all that sounds like far, far too much work.

I'd rather just buy a life. So, is anyone willing to sell theirs?

If you don't want to be burdened with real social activities anymore, if you long for a time when you can sit at home and contemplate whether the 51st century Time Agent reference in "The Empty Child" supports or contradicts "Talons of Weng-Chiang" ... well, then you're clearly not going to be needing your life anytime soon.

Of course, I reserve the right to reject any life that's offered. I understand that life must have some degree of suffering. I've listened to Captain Kirk pontificate about it, after all. But well, if you've got leprosy or have death squads after you, that's just a bit too much life for me.

I'm with you sister/brother!

Is it sad that I enjoy DVD viewing as a large part of my life?

[identity profile] puckrobin.livejournal.com 2006-04-25 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I have to warn you that it is an early warning sign of being afflicted with Generation X disease. A sad and dehabilitating condition, but not a fatal one. It doesn't shorten one's life, but rather extends childhood over a few extra decades. Sadly, I too suffer from this condition.

Here's a Generation X self-test.

1. Who shot first? Han or Greedo?
2. Do you practice ironic detachment or similar wit more than once a day?
3. Would you define yourself by your job or would you rather avoid mentioning it?

If you answer those questions correctly, then you are a Gen-Xer. If you get question 1 wrong - well, you have my deepest sympathies.

I don't know if there's a cure besides shrugging one's shoulders and going "Feh!" (Not that I've ever heard anyone say Feh! in real-life, but it looks good in print.)

re-posted my reply to put the correct link in...

1. Han
2. yes
3. avoid

Feh? I thought it was "Meh" (which I do say)...

I love my DVDs... but I don't love my DVDs...

http://www.dvdspot.com/member=cagewench - details what DVDs I own (if you are curious)

Well, I have to inform you that yes, you are indeed a Gen-Xer. (I was tempted to use a line like "Do you remember where you were when Greedo was shot?" like the Kennedy line that's said about baby boomers.)

Seems like feh and meh both have a history, although the emotion I was thinking of seems to fit meh more precisely.

So, Forever Knight - are you planning to buy the third series when it comes out, or are you (like me) a Schenke loyalist? (Actually, I haven't got those DVDs, because some stores are charging a lot of money for them.)

Ooh! I just got them on Amazon.ca last wk... on sale for $55 something a season... cheapest I've ever seen them! Even cheaper than amazon.com which is usually a better deal even with the exchange rate and yes, I am dying for season 3...

Divvia (?) and Vachon and the best series ENDING EVER!!!!!!!!!!!

I used to have much of season 3 on VHS but those tapes have been lost or destroyed over the years...

I don't know, I think Blake's 7 (old British space opera) outdoes it for having all the main characters die in the finale.

I think the second season was my favourite as it had most of the same chemistry as the first season (with more LaCroix), but it also integrated the A and B story a lot better than the first season.

I gather Schanke left mainly because of budget cuts. The same reason that they replaced Ray on Due South. (And possibly, reading between the lines of some articles, why Christopher Eccleston didn't do a second series of Doctor Who.)

It was nice to have a show filmed in Toronto that was actually set in TO. So many shows from Night Heat to Kung Fu: The Legend Continues were set in the generic North American city.

Actually I read that C.E. orginally signed on just for one season because he didn't want to be typecast and then the British media blew the surprise by revealling he was leaving before the finale aired.

As, allegedly, the original intention was to really shock the viewers with the Doctor's regeneration.

I am keenly excited on the word that former companion "Sarah Jane Smith" is returning this season, though I don't know for how long and Anthony Stewart Head is guest-starring at some point as well :>

I've heard of Blake's 7 but never seen it...

and back to FK: yes, I loved that it was blatantly TO :>

I've heard conflicting stories about why Eccleston didn't want to do another season. I know when the BBC issued a press release about typecasting, Eccleston reacted very badly claiming words had been put in my mouth. I figure that him only doing the first season (or 27th, depending on one's perspective) was always likely. But apparently there was a possibility of him doing more.

Of course, when Eccleston did decide to leave, I know they wanted to keep the regeneration a surprise. But we live in an age where film scripts are routinely posted online long before the movie is out.

I know David Tennant gets paid a lot less (according to one report, less than Billie Piper does.)

I'm really, really looking forward to seeing Sarah Jane again. I'm even slightly misty-eyed at K9. Anthony Stewart Head once topped a poll as to who should play the Doctor. (And there were a lot of - now-debunked - rumours that he'd be the Master in the new series.)

I should see it in a couple of weeks. For years, I sent Buffy and Angel tapes to a friend in the UK who wasn't content to wait. And now she's going to be returning the favour. (I already have a nice DVD of the 5 minute charity special with Tennant and Piper set immediately before the Christmas Invasion.)

I did not get to see that (the 5 min special)...

I have seen ep 1 of the new season with D.T. though... :>

Do you mean "New Earth"? I'm jealous. (g) (Yes, I'll see it in a couple of days. But a couple of days isn't now.)

If you want, it's easy enough to burn you a copy of the Children in Need special. I've done it for Marytek.

who was your fav Doctor? Mine is Jon Pertwee.

[identity profile] puckrobin.livejournal.com 2006-04-26 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
Actually, I'd say it's Christopher Eccleston at the moment. Of the originals, Tom Baker. But as the Brig once said "Splendid chap -- all of them". (I prefer the more anti-authoritarian Pertwee from his first season than from when the UNIT family got a bit too comfortable.)

So, did you see Pertwee when he came to Kitchener in the early 1980s? I did. (Co-editor of a Dr. Who zine back in the day - my collaborator, Jaime, was from KW.)

No I didn't get to.. my 1st (ex) fiancee did though.

And my friend Dan Kukwa was head of a Doctor Who club 'round here in the 90s I believe...
