Wanted: A Life
You know, I've been wondering why I don't update my blog with my daily activities - cats acting up or trips to coffee shops or well, anything that isn't artistic criticism or political activism. At first, I thought maybe it's just because I'm a pedantic bore.
But obviously, that's not the case.
The truth is that I don't appear to have a life at the moment. I used to have a life. Back in university, I definitely had one. Now I have a job - that hollow non-life of the 9 to 5 that most of us share. But I don't have that much of a life when I get home. As fun as the episodes on the used Star Trek: The Original Series (Season Two) DVD set are, or my Firefly and Doctor Who DVDs are, it's not really a life.
Now, I could buy some self-help books, go to clubs, join some groups, or get a lobotomy and join a mainstream religion. But really, all that sounds like far, far too much work.
I'd rather just buy a life. So, is anyone willing to sell theirs?
If you don't want to be burdened with real social activities anymore, if you long for a time when you can sit at home and contemplate whether the 51st century Time Agent reference in "The Empty Child" supports or contradicts "Talons of Weng-Chiang" ... well, then you're clearly not going to be needing your life anytime soon.
Of course, I reserve the right to reject any life that's offered. I understand that life must have some degree of suffering. I've listened to Captain Kirk pontificate about it, after all. But well, if you've got leprosy or have death squads after you, that's just a bit too much life for me.

Here's a Generation X self-test.

I don't know if there's a cure besides shrugging one's shoulders and going "Feh!" (Not that I've ever heard anyone say Feh! in real-life, but it looks good in print.)

So, Forever Knight - are you planning to buy the third series when it comes out, or are you (like me) a Schenke loyalist? (Actually, I haven't got those DVDs, because some stores are charging a lot of money for them.)

I think the second season was my favourite as it had most of the same chemistry as the first season (with more LaCroix), but it also integrated the A and B story a lot better than the first season.
I gather Schanke left mainly because of budget cuts. The same reason that they replaced Ray on Due South. (And possibly, reading between the lines of some articles, why Christopher Eccleston didn't do a second series of Doctor Who.)
It was nice to have a show filmed in Toronto that was actually set in TO. So many shows from Night Heat to Kung Fu: The Legend Continues were set in the generic North American city.

As, allegedly, the original intention was to really shock the viewers with the Doctor's regeneration.
I am keenly excited on the word that former companion "Sarah Jane Smith" is returning this season, though I don't know for how long and Anthony Stewart Head is guest-starring at some point as well :>

Of course, when Eccleston did decide to leave, I know they wanted to keep the regeneration a surprise. But we live in an age where film scripts are routinely posted online long before the movie is out.
I know David Tennant gets paid a lot less (according to one report, less than Billie Piper does.)
I'm really, really looking forward to seeing Sarah Jane again. I'm even slightly misty-eyed at K9. Anthony Stewart Head once topped a poll as to who should play the Doctor. (And there were a lot of - now-debunked - rumours that he'd be the Master in the new series.)
I should see it in a couple of weeks. For years, I sent Buffy and Angel tapes to a friend in the UK who wasn't content to wait. And now she's going to be returning the favour. (I already have a nice DVD of the 5 minute charity special with Tennant and Piper set immediately before the Christmas Invasion.)
