I'm rewatching the first series on the DVD, and it's like watching my vacation photos of Cardiff --- well, if I had access to a helicopter or posed on tall buildings for the purpose of being cool. (I can understand the immortal Jack's penchant for roofs, but when he must have asked the mortal Gwen to meet on top of the Wales Millennium Centre, did not it occur to her to suggest a more rational meeting place?)

Anyway, I saw one scene that I think was filmed just across from the hostel I stayed in. (Both just across the river Taff from the Millennium Stadium -- the late 1990s must have been a building boom in the city with a decline in original names.) Also, I recognized streets, shopping arcades, and the train station. And of course, Cardiff Bay -- although I wish I had read up on where the front door to Torchwood was supposed to be.)

I caught the second series premiere on YouTube (having spent last weekend at a home with high-speed internet). I think they are really trying to emulate Joss Whedon. And I don't just say that because James Marsters guest-starred. The whole opening sequence with the blowfish alien and "Did you miss me?" entrance felt like it should be followed by the Buffy or Angel theme.

And the dialogue had more of the ironic Whedonesque tone, like noting that Jack was good with roofs. It was kind of fun, but I'm not sure the best way forward is to borrow so heavily from another show's tone.

That said, I did like the Captain Jack/Spi.. errr, Captain John fight/make-out scene. Why don't more science fiction shows put passionate gay kisses into their fight scenes?
