Why I Am Not a Christian
Feb. 27th, 2007 09:08 amSo, yesterday a co-worker -- Captain Cliché -- was asking if I would be going to funeral of my former co-worker. I said that I would be going to the memorial service, but I didn't know what the funeral arrangements were because he was an atheist. Then it looked as if Captain Cliché was suddenly constipated. "Oh, an atheist. It's sad when they die." It soon became apparent that what he meant was he thinks my friend will be burning in hell for a long, long time.
And of course, because I haven't accepted Jesus as my personal or even impersonal saviour, I also can look forward to an eternity of divinely-sanctioned torture. Of course, I'll be joined by all the agnostics, atheists, Pagans, Jews, Buddhists, Hindus, gays, and probably even the fairly liberal Christians I know. Actually, I guess the majority of people on the planet can look forward to being tortured if Captain Cliché's concept of an afterlife were at all accurate.
I expect Captain Cliché to think like that. What scares me is just how many people out there feel the same way.
I have a real problem with people who think it's just and glorious and holy to torture me and my friends. And as God supposedly wrote the rules that allow for hell -- theologically, the Great Sky Bully is the one who would be ultimately culpable for hell -- not me, my friends or the Devil.
Bertrand Russell and Richard Dawkins wrote whole books to explain why they weren't Christians. Me, I think this blog entry pretty much covers it.
On a related note, did I mention how much I miss MotherCorp?
