Damn!

The latest polls suggest a Tory majority. Argh!

I appreciate the problem. It's not like the Liberal Party has given Canadians any compelling reasons to keep them in office. In fact, in a working democracy, an opposition majority would be a foregone conclusion. Like when the Progressive Conservatives won big time in 1984, and then the Liberals decimated the Tories in 1993. When Canadians are pissed off with the government, they don't fool around.

But these new Tories ... well, their sins aren't merely the creation of Liberal Party attack ads. Consistently, members of that party have spoken out against gay rights, against minorities, expressed a desire to flirt with private health care. And they've done all this at times when people weren't paying too much attention. Of course, Harper's acting Prime Ministerial now. He'd be a fool not to act that way.

But it's a bit like an abusive boyfriend who buys the love of his gal with flowers. He's still an abuser, and that will show again ... probably before the flowers have even wilted.

I still remember the first time the Reform Party ran federally in Ontario. I remember the candidate coming to my door, and having him explain to me that every value that wasn't white and Anglo-Saxon wasn't Canadian. Today's Conservatives are that same party under another name.

I worry about the state of Canada's future. I worry that under the Tories we might actually become a "State". In nature, if not in name.
